Punta Cana

The island of Hispaniola lies in the heart of the Caribbean. To the north is the Atlantic Ocean and to the south the Caribbean Sea. Hispaniola is the second largest island in the Greater Antilles after Cuba. The Dominican Republic occupies 2/3 of the island and has become the most popular destination in the Caribbean in the last 10 years.

Known for having one of the nicest beaches in the Caribbean, this balneal destination offers a choice of high-class hotels for you to spend an unforgettable time.  Its 32 kilometers of beach and its 300,000 palm trees invite you to relax and enjoy the local “joie de vivre.”

The most visited area of the island, Punta Cana, is located at the extreme east side of the island, where the waters of the Atlantic Ocean meet the blue waters of the Caribbean Sea. The Punta Cana beach is a long uninterrupted ribbon of white sand accompanied of thousands of palm trees. At Macao, Cortecito, Bavaro, Cabeza de Toro and Cap Cana, high-class resorts were built very close to the beach. They welcome thousands of tourists every year who arrive very easily through the international airport located a few minutes away.

Forbes Travel Guide – 4/14/2012

What: A large, tropical resort in the Dominican Republic, Fishing Lodge Cap Cana draws a mix of families and those looking to let loose in the Caribbean. The new retreat was opened in November 2011 […] and is made up of colorful colonial-style buildings, with several pools and palm trees at every turn. The airy guest rooms have a residential feel and come with full kitchens, locally made furnishings, and some have private balconies that hover over infinity pools. Other standout features include a market where you can buy fresh fish, several swimming pools to fit your mood and onsite restaurants (our Forbes Travel Guide editor recommends watching the sunset at the upscale Mediterranean spot Bistrot).

Where: While many Dominican Republic resorts are found on the beach, this spot is on a marina—the largest inland marina in the Caribbean. It serves as a glistening focal point for the resort and adds to its fishing lodge flavor (you might even see fishermen delivering catches throughout the day). And though it’s mostly land-bound, the white sand beaches and ocean are a two-minute shuttle ride away.

When: Fishing Lodge is on the cusp of becoming a major entertainment attraction in the Dominican. Plans are underway to open a casino and dozens of shops by the end of this year. If you want to avoid the crowds, go soon while things are still quiet; but if you’re looking for a vibrant nightlife scene, wait until later this year when the resort will be humming with activity. Spring and summer bring high temperatures and hurricane season stretches into the fall—you’ll get the most from this tropical spot in the winter.

Why: The Dominican Republic is lined with resorts, but Fishing Lodge stands out with its local flair. Everything from the furniture to the food is locally made—in fact, many of the light fixtures in the lobby were crafted from old bottles of Presidente, the area’s iconic and beloved brand of beer. Dominican native and Boston Red Sox star David Ortiz has been known to make appearances at Fishing Lodge, where he hosted a golf tournament last winter.

Each accommodation offers designer furnishings, full kitchens, living and dining areas, luxurious bedding, flat-panel televisions with cable service, a private patio or balcony, high-speed Internet, full bathrooms with luxury bath amenities, bathrobes and slippers, gourmet teas and coffees, stainless steel appliances, an in-room safe, and much more. From junior suites to three-bedroom villas, choosing the right size and style of accommodations for your party is easy. Fishing Lodge Cap Cana is great for wedding parties, families, groups of friends, family reunions, anniversaries, and even couples seeking a quiet, luxury getaway.

Dining at the Fishing Lodge includes Mediterranean-inspired cuisine, casual meals by the pool, organic salads, fresh seafood, custom picnics, room service, and casual cuisine in the sports bar.

An infinity pool that drops into the marina, along with three other pools will delight those seeking a little fun in the sun. In addition to beautiful pools, trendy bars, grills, and shopping at 90 retail spaces throughout the resort, there is top golf available (for a fee).

Designed by Jack Nicklaus, the Punta Espada Golf Club was rated as the best course in the Caribbean and Mexico by Golfweek magazine. With eight holes right along the Caribbean Sea, the scenery can’t be beat. When you are done with a day on this amazing golf course, you can hit the luxurious spa located nearby at Sanctuary Cap Cana for a massage, facial, manicure, pedicure, etc. (for a fee).

Bicycles are also available for rent, as are boats, fishing charters, and other excursions to nearby attractions in Punta Cana.
